Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MRI and how does it work?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of your body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use any radiation, making it a safe and non-invasive diagnostic tool.
Is an MRI safe?
Yes. MRI is one of the safest imaging exams available. There are no known long-term side effects from MRI, and it’s commonly used across all age groups — including children and pregnant women (when necessary and approved by your physician).
Do I need to prepare for my MRI?
In most cases, no special preparation is needed. However, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Wear comfortable clothing without metal (you may be asked to change into a gown)
Avoid wearing makeup with metallic particles (like some mascaras or eye shadows)
Remove jewelry, watches, and hearing aids before the scan
Before your MRI, you’ll complete a safety questionnaire with our staff to ensure there are no contraindications.
How long does an MRI take?
Most MRI scans take about 20 to 30 minutes, though some may take a bit longer depending on the area being scanned.
Are there any reasons I shouldn’t have an MRI?
Yes — certain medical devices or conditions can make MRI unsafe. Before your scan, you’ll complete a safety questionnaire with our staff to ensure there are no contraindications.
Some conditions we screen for include:
Pacemakers or defibrillators
Neurostimulators
Cochlear (inner ear) implants
Implanted drug infusion pumps
Metal aneurysm clips (especially within 6 months of the scan)
Shrapnel, bullet fragments, or metal particles in the eyes
What should I tell my MRI provider before the scan?
As part of your appointment, you’ll complete a thorough questionnaire so we can confirm your scan is completely safe.
We’ll ask about:
Pregnancy
Tattoos or permanent makeup
Surgical implants or metal in your body
Metal shavings in your eyes (common with metal workers)
Copper IUDs (e.g., ParaGard)
Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely! You're welcome to bring a friend or family member for support. However, due to safety protocols, they may need to wait in the waiting room during the actual scan.
What if I’m claustrophobic or nervous?
You’re not alone — many patients feel uneasy about MRI. At PDR, we offer have an Open MRI and a compassionate team trained to help patients with anxiety or claustrophobia. Please let us know your concerns, and we’ll do everything we can to help you feel comfortable.
Will I get a copy of my MRI?
Yes! We’ll provide a free CD with your MRI images for you to take to your doctor or specialist. Your report will also be sent directly to your referring physician within 24–48 hours.
If you'd like a personal copy of your MRI report, just let us know — we’re happy to provide one upon request.
